Scaled Clubmen
The club punctuates war’s brutal poetry.Scale armour arguably provides greater defence against than the standard chainmail that came to dominate late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Overlapping armour plates of metal, leather or horn - in varying shapes (but usually squares or fish scales) - were attached to one another and then sewn to an undershirt of cloth or leather in rows. Scales were used extensively by nomadic warriors such as the Scythians and Sarmatians, and eventually by the Romans too. They used scale mail - or 'lorica squamata' - from the days of the Roman Republic, although it was eventually superseded by the more famous 'lorica segmentata' commonly worn by Legionaries of the post-Marian period. Scale armour was also used far from Europe, where Japanese samurai warriors wore 'kozane' - literally 'fish scales' - from the 11th century AD onwards, before the advent of plate armour (which could stop bullets) relegated it to a ceremonial capacity only.
