Town Guard
A spear and a shield is all it takes to lay criminals low.The 'Madayan I Hazar Dadestan' or 'Book of a Thousand Judgements' is a document from the first half of the 7th century AD that sheds light on the Sassanid legal system. It mentions that 'street keepers' - or 'koy ban' - were tasked with keeping law and order within the empire's towns and cities. The street keepers held limited authority over the regular populace, but the people were nevertheless supposed to follow their orders. The text also mentions 'gizir' - which means 'guards' - who were tasked with patrolling the streets. It is possible that these Sassanid proto-policemen were former infantrymen from the lowest classes of the Imperial army. Although lacking in both training and equipment, they were still able to perform their duties adequately.
