Baalshamin, the Lord of Heaven, was an ancient sky god whose cult was popular among the Semitic people from Syria. It is possible that Phoenician travellers brought knowledge of the god to the city of Palmyra, where locals embraced it and elevated Baalshamin to the position of chief god in their pantheon. He, Aglibol, God of the Moon, and Malakbel, God of the Sun, were worshipped as a trinity that held deep spiritual weight among the faithful. Being a lord of heaven, Baalshamin was believed to be in full control of the weather, which changed according to his current mood. Therefore, it was important to always be on his good side if one hoped to see some rain in this arid part of the world.
