Vigiles Urbani
The efforts of the few guarantee the security of the many. The 'vigiles urbani' were a body of seven thousand free people tasked by Emperor Augustus with fighting fires in Rome's labyrinthine streets. Although ostensibly a fire patrol, they were also able to thwart any criminal activity or public disorder they came across. Along with the vigiles, policing was responsibility of the 'cohortes urbanae' who were deployed as a means of riot control. Additionally, should the circumstances prove to be sufficiently dire, they were trained well enough to participate in field battles. Although they were never as important, and therefore never wielded the political power of the praetorians, service in the cohortes urbanae could be used as a stepping stone towards enlistment in that prestigious unit.
