The river of money flows through this place on its way to the Imperial treasury.The expanding territory of the Roman Empire demanded a bureaucratic system of ever-growing complexity. The duties of collecting and managing taxes were handled by quaestors. Taxes aside, a quaestor also served as a direct subordinate of a provincial governor and sometimes had a military role too. The Imperial treasury itself was overseen by an official with the title 'rationalis', who was involved in tax collection, currency flow and the management of mines and mints. Careful deliberation was required before appointing a rationalis, as too much gold concentrated in a single pair of hands tends to muddle the mind of their owner...
