Classiarii Barracks
Wielding a sword on a ship is just the same as on land - it requires practice.Seaborne fleets were instrumental in Rome's naval dominance which led to the Mediterranean being lovingly dubbed "Mare Nostrum" or "Our Sea" in the early days of the Empire. Roman ships saw little to no action during the 2nd century AD and whenever a fleet had to intervene it was almost always used to support ground troops. The Crisis of the 3rd Century abruptly changed the situation. As the Empire cracked apart from internal instability, the Saxoni launched coastal raids against Britannia, while the Gothi sailed across the Black Sea to torch the lands to the south. Rome's naval command had grown complacent with the long peace and so the marauding barbarians inflicted terrible casualties and destroyed much of its fleet. The writing was on the wall: the recruitment of properly-trained crews must be paramount if there was to be any hope of withstanding future invasions.
