對東方帝國和大草原人民來說，輕騎兵是常備兵種。對所有輕騎兵來說，不論是Aphraktoi還是斯基台人抑或是薩卡弓箭手，速度就是他們的盔甲。從波斯大馬到更小更靈敏的亞美尼亞馬，甚至是單峰駝和雙峰駝，他們都得依靠它們的快速和毅力來作戰。這些騎兵通常被指派巡邏貿易路線和空蕩的邊陲地區，戰時他們還可以作為偵察隊和騎兵陣的側翼，他們都是極其具有價值的。

在戰鬥中輕騎兵要用槍矛或者弓箭不斷騷擾敵人，面對嚴陣以待的對方要迅速撤退。當他們的數量足夠多時，輕騎兵可以驅逐散兵，但他們只有在沖破敵人陣型的時候才會與敵人近距離交戰，把他們驅出戰場，阻止他們重整隊伍。
