Training Grounds
Drilled and disciplined, soldiers are only as good as their training. As the art of warfare developed among the Italic peoples, tactics became more organised and required disciplined training in order to carry them out. For the Samnites, being a soldier was an integral part of the their lifestyle. Youth first trained for military service by serving as gatekeepers. Holidays were often celebrated with war-games, a practice later adopted by Rome. Another Samnite ‘invention’, later adopted by the Romans, was the manipular system. After a series of defeats using the Greek phalanx, culminating in the defeat at Caudine Forks, the Romans adopted this more flexible system, which better prepared them for fighting on the local terrain.
