Harbour
A rough sea is no place to keep a valuable vessel. While tribal societies were not great seafarers across the deeps, the opportunities for trading and raiding by sea were appreciated: coastal trade was certainly possible. As the Mediterranean powers began to sail in the Atlantic, trade from areas such as Cornwall and Brittany proved profitable. Tin, in particular, was a much sought after resource as it was needed to make bronze. As great traders, the Carthaginians established the sea-trade, but it showed the locals where there were riches to be had. The Gallic Veneti tribe, for example, became renowned for their skill as shipwrights. Their use of oak and iron in the construction of their vessels made them incredibly strong, as the Romans discovered when Caesar’s fleet met sturdy Veneti ships in 56BC.
