Grove of Kerres

An altar to Kerres, goddess of nature and mother of the people.

‘Kerres’ (or ‘Ceres’) was widely worshipped in southern Italy and was the Roman goddess of agriculture, fertility and motherly relationships. She had the power to fertilise, multiply and fructify seeds. There was even a festival dedicated to her – the so-called ‘Cerealia’. Held in April, it was organised by the plebeian aediles and included a horse race, after which foxes were released in to the circus, their tails ablaze with lighted torches, which was possibly to cleanse the growing crops and protect them from vermin.
