Polyobed Nuraghe

A centre of trade, politics and military power, bringing glory to the people.

The Nuraghi are some of the largest megalithic sights still standing in Europe. The typical nuraghe was shaped into a truncated conical tower, looking a lot like a medieval tower on the outside and a beehive from the inside. There are a large variety of different Nuraghi, in various shapes and sizes, with earlier ones mainly consisting of a single tower. With time, the Nuragic builders learnt how to construct much more elaborate buildings with several towers linked by high ramparts protecting a central tower. The function of these Nuraghi is still very much debated among historians of the period; they could just as easily have been residences, strongholds, temples, houses - and most probably a combination of them all.
