"Fight! Fight for me and you will be rewarded!"Subsistence in small settlements became increasingly harder as the Roman Empire fell into crisis. Many villages were left defenceless and had to fend for themselves. Bandits, pirates and rogue military regiments were a common occurrence, some of them forming large companies and becoming strong enough to be recognised as a threat to smaller states. With the proper 'encouragement', they could be persuaded to fight as mercenaries, supporting the military effort of the highest bidder – the right amount of gold can make a band of raiders fight with impressive fervour.
