Auxiliary Bactrian Hillmen

The Bactrian plain is to the west of the Hindu Kush in what is now Afghanistan. During the 1st century AD, the Kushan Empire was formed in Bactrian territories, encompassing the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent. The Kushan dynasty had diplomatic contacts with the Roman Empire and Sassanid Persia, and was influenced by both sides. During the 3rd century AD, its empire fragmented into many small autonomous kingdoms that were easily conquered by the Sassanids. After the death of Vasudeva I in AD 225, the Kushan territories split into western and eastern halves. In AD 248, they were defeated again by the Persians, who dethroned the western dynasty and substituted them with Persian vassals known as the Kushanshahs (or Indo-Sassanids). The Kushan military had many influences, from the nomadic Yuezhi, who were the initiating force behind the Kushan Empire, to their subsequent Persian conquerors.
