Auxiliary Libyan Infantry
The desert battlefield hardens warriors, turning them into an unstoppable force.Under the rule of Augustus, the Romans completed their conquest of northern Africa. As part of Africa Nova province, the Libyan Tripolitania region was prosperous and reached a golden age during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Its greatest city, Leptis Magna, grew rapidly under Roman administration and achieved its greatest prominence in 193 AD as home to Emperor Septimius Severus. As the Imperial family's foremost residence, the strongest Libyan warriors were recruited into its personal guard and later used as auxiliary units elsewhere in the Empire. The local Berber tribes consisted of tough desert fighters with a strong military tradition, having famously fought on both sides during the cataclysmic Punic Wars. During the 3rd century AD, the Roman Empire fell into its greatest crisis yet, and with it trade deteriorated precipitously. This led to Leptis Magna's decline in importance - the region was mostly abandoned, as its soldiers were stationed on European fronts, fighting alongside the Roman Legions.
