

Native Lucanian Ambushers
The unexpected, armed with javelins and swords, is never welcome.The Lucanians are an ancient Italic tribe from the southern Italian region of Lucania. Oscan in origin, they are said to have migrated from the Apennine mountains, driving away or assimilating the indigenous tribes of Oenotrians, Chones and Lauternoi. In terms of their appearance and culture, the Lucanians were quite similar to the Samnites, wearing similar triple-disc armour and large, bronze belts over their tunics in battle. Lucanian tribes were warlike in nature; their forces fought their Greek neighbours on more than one occasion, against the Italiote League and Taras. According to Diodorus' chronicles, Lucanian warriors also participated in the wars between Dionysius I of Syracuse and the Greeks of southern Italy, joining the tyrant's forces as mercenaries. Rome also fought the Lucanian tribes, albeit late in the 4th century BC, during the Samnite Wars.
