Hippotoxotes

The Greco-Persian wars were a series of conflicts between Achaemenid Persia and the Greek city-states, starting in 499BC and enduring for the next half-century. The battles between these powers saw the clash of Greek-style phalanxes and supporting troops against the diverse Persian army, which had mastered the bow, using it to great effect both on foot and on horseback. After the war against the Persians ended, Greek generals would have been fools not to acknowledge the effectiveness of mounted archers, which could attack and quickly retreat, and were impossible for hoplites to catch up with. As Athens' cavalry corps grew in numbers, a two hundred-strong body of hippotoxotes (horse archers) were fielded to support the main army. According to Xenophon, they even led the cavalry charge, riding ahead to soften up the enemy before retreating behind the main lines.
