Native Sabine Warriors
These tribesmen from the Apennines have a score to settle with Rome. The Sabines were an Italic tribe who lived along the central Apennines and northern Latium. The founding of Rome divided them into two distinct populations, half being integrated into the new city while the other half remained a mountain tribe who later fought against their Roman neighbours. During the period when Rome had a monarchy, there was much conflict between Roman forces and the Sabine tribes, with the Roman kings celebrating triumphs for their victories against the mountain folk. Most battles ended in victory for the fledgling city, with Roman cavalry being key to the defeat of the Sabine forces. There was even the Bloodless War in 501 BC, following which Rome demanded restitution for the costs of all its past wars against the Sabines; when they refused, Rome declared war, but ultimately no battles were fought.
