

Native Volsci Warriors
One of Rome's oldest enemies, the Volsci will fight as long and as hard as they must.The Volsci were an Italic tribe that played a significant part in Rome's early history; Strabo mentions them as a sovereign state in the marshlands to the southeast of Rome. Volscian migration into southern Latium led to conflict, with the Latin natives under Roman leadership. Rome's seventh and final king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, was the first to go to war against the Volsci, initiating two centuries of strife between them. By the late 5th century BC, the Volsci had lost multiple battles and were increasingly on the defensive, eventually being incorporated into the Roman Republic near the end of the Samnite Wars. According to Livy, the relationship between Rome and the Volsci was not always hostile; during the approach of the Clusian army in 508BC, the Senate even purchased grain from the Volsci in order to feed the lower classes.
