古代的战船究竟有多大,人们对此争论不休;原理容易理解,但细节却并不清晰。如果按字面理解,四桡战船似乎是有四列桨桡的船。然而,四组桨桡各有一组划桨手,即使船员个个训练有素,这样的组合是如何正常运行而不陷入混乱,或最上一组划桨手何以操纵那么长的桨,以那么尖锐的角度,还能产生动力的,这些问题我们都不清楚。很可能所谓的“四桡”只是四组划桨手,最下一层的桨桡由多组人员操纵。另一种可能,则是双排桨桡,分别由两组人员操纵。两组桨桡也降低了船只的建设成本。无论哪种方式,结果都是四桡舰可以在速度上战胜较轻型的三桡舰,同时还有更多的甲板空间容纳大型战斗部队或砲兵
