The Han's establishment of a professional, semi-permanent fighting force did not create a vast army, but a well-trained one. This northern army was made to resist invasions from beyond the border.
These warriors are experts with the ji spear, and well-armoured besides. They will hold the line better than any locally-trained militia, for they have earned their skills with blood, pushing back the tribes of the mountains.
