Strategic Fortresses

One of the earliest, and most enduring rules of battle is that position is key. In strategic terms, this is the placement of defences and fortresses. Not only must be a fort be strong and well-manned, but so placed as to make it as difficult for an attacker to overcome.

Upon hills and along the banks of rivers, the earth provides natural barriers to besieging forces, who face the prospect of dramatic losses if they wish to successfully seize the defences.
